GO DOGS, GO!: Funk-A-Holics vocalist Marc Caldera, second from left, turned to watch the Atomic Horn Dogs, DeShannon Higa (trumpet) and Larry Cook (sax), jam as the band kicked off "The FunkTion," a new weekly event at Longhi's Ala Moana, on Saturday. Randy Aloya, left, and drummer Stu Sherman were a solid rhythm section, Charlie Longhi rocked on guitar, and keyboardist Ricky Peterson, not in picture, added a great retro ambiance on Hammond B3 organ. Al Neal, J.P. Smoketrain, Peter Maharaj, "Loud Larry" Lieberman, John Valentine, Greg and Sandy Sardinha, Anita Hall, Michael Grande, Rocky Brown and Lance Rae were notables in the crowd that enjoyed the band's renditions of soul classics from the '60s and early '70s. "What is Hip" was a highlight of the first set.

"HAPPY UN-BIRTHDAY, JACK!": Marie Steuber and Art Gieger, right, flew in from the mainland for Jack Marin's big "50th un-birthday party" party in Kailua on Saturday. Geiger and his wife came from Vancouver, WA, for the local-style backyard party, Steuber and her husband from Sacramento. Marin, whose birthday is actually earlier in the year, held off throwing the party until his out-of-town friends could attend and had leis for everybody as well as fresh mahimahi and other local delicacies. He told the crowd that he feels "more like I did at 12 than the big five-0."

HI MEL!: Scott "Scott from Scotland" Ruddock, left, joined Matt Grimm in welcoming Mel Cambra to "SKYLiNE" at the Hanohano Room on Saturday. The glow-in-the-dark Ciroc "ice cubes" were the hit of the party. 'Aukai Reynolds said "they help you see who you're talking to here."

SHAKESPEARE, THEIR WAY: Cast members of "Femme Capulet," Troy Apolstol's "deconstruction" of "Romeo and Juliet," looked none the worse for the wear after a strenuous performance at The ARTS at Marks Garage on Sunday. Ryan Sutherlan (Benvolio), left, Carmen Jones (Juliet), Marissa Robello (Mercutio), Puaena Ahn (Romeo), Shen Nissan Sugai (Friar Laurence) and Stu Hirayama (Juliet's Nurse) do a memorable job with this unconventional take on the classic tragedy.

AFTER HOURS EXERCISE: James Cunningham, who operates the soundboard during performances of "Femme Capulet" and plays the role of a "gentlemen's club" bouncer before the show starts, probably could have won a few bets when he playfully benchpressed cast member Marissa Robello several times during the after-show cast party on Sunday. One moment everybody was chilling and drinking, the next moment it was show time!
