Song, Tucker qualify for SBS Open

LPGA Tour rookies Naree Song and Natalie Tucker carded identical 1-under 71s yesterday at the Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course to qualify for this week's inaugural SBS Open.

The two led a field of 20 hopefuls for the LPGA's full-field season opener, which included Hawaii high school golfers Mari Chun (77) and Stephanie Kono (78). Headlining the $1 million event are Grace Park, Lorena Ochoa, Meg Mallon and Cristie Kerr, four of the top five money-winners from last season.

The pro-am is tomorrow, and the 54-hole event runs Thursday through Saturday.

Semifinals set in USTA junior nationals

Fifth-seeded Alex Krueger-Wyman upset top seed George Entis 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to today's semifinals of the USTA Junior National Open at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Krueger-Wyman will take on Stephen Stege. The other semifinal has second-seeded Wesley Miller against Tommy Hicks.

In the girls' semifinals, top seed Amanda Fink faces Kristin McNitty and Samantha Georgino takes on Brintney Larson.

Clay, Kamana'o top Quarterback Club awards

Decathlete Bryan Clay, the Olympic silver medalist at last summer's Games, and Hawaii women's volleyball All-American setter Kanoe Kamana'o were named the Sportspersons of 2004 at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's annual Banquet of Champions at the Ala Moana Hotel Sunday.

Clay and Kamana'o doubled up in awards after winning the adult athletes of the year. Former Iolani basketball standout Derrick Low, now the starting point guard at Washington State, was named the prep male athlete of the year for the third consecutive year.

The George Archer Coach of the Year Award went to UH women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji. The Rainbow Wahine compiled a 30-1 record in advancing to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 last December.

Bryant earns WAC weekly pitching honor

Hawaii senior right-hander Stephen Bryant was named the Western Athletic Conference's baseball Pitcher of the Week yesterday, the first weekly honor for the Rainbows this season.

Bryant struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings Friday in a 10-2 victory over Pacific. He allowed just one hit to pick up his first victory of the year.

BYUH's Chrisman is PacWest basketball pick

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Jake Chrisman was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week in basketball last week.

Chrisman had 80 points in three wins, shooting 78.6 percent from the field (33 of 42) and averaging 8. 7 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Top-ranked Arizona doubles up on Wahine

The Hawaii softball team fell victim to No. 1 Arizona twice Sunday, losing to the Wildcats 4-0 and 2-1 at the Worth Wildcat Invitational at Tucson, Ariz.

In the second game, Kristie Fox's sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the eighth won it for Arizona (9-0). The lone run for the Rainbow Wahine (5-6) came in the sixth on Tracie Uchima's lead-off homer, just the third extra-base hit given up by UA's Alicia Hollowell in eight games this season.

» Leo Sing Chow, a sophomore pitcher for Hawaii-Hilo, was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week in softball.

Sing Chow had a three-hit, eight-strikeout performance in an 8-2 win over Chaminade and followed it up with a one-hitter in a victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii. For the week, she had an ERA of 0.50 and 10 strikeouts in 14 innings.

» Hawaii Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 11-3 and 6-0 in a nonconference softball doubleheader yesterday in Laie.

Brandi Peiler and Nicole Kalakau each hit a home run to pace the Sea Warriors in the first game .

Peiler pitched a complete-game five-hitter in the second game.

Murray sets mark at all-comers meet

Two-time WAC discus champion Novelle Murray of Hawaii warmed up for her chase at another league title by breaking her own UH record in the 20-pound weight toss during Saturday's All-Comers Meet No. 4 at Cooke Field. Novelle's toss was 57 feet and 5 1/4 inches. UH is preparing for the WAC indoor meet in Boise, Idaho.

Hawaii's Tasha Monroe set the school record in the 60-meter run in 7.88 seconds, while Diane Buchanan set a new school record in the 1000 meters in 2:55.41.
