Mos Def
shows up late

After leaving his fans hanging for an hour and a half, Mos Def took the stage at Pipeline on Saturday night like a commando during a raid.

Hot 93.9's DJ Jimmy Taco could keep the crowd satiated with a solid old school mix for only so long, before a chorus of boos started to get louder between each song. Even "Lost" star Dominic Monaghan looked a little peeved as he elbowed his way through the crowd.

Mos finally made his entrance around 11:20 p.m. (just 10 minutes before his set was originally supposed to end) with no introduction -- all of a sudden you could hear his voice, and there he was. Sporting a hat, sunglasses and bandana over his nose and mouth, the rapper looked like he was just as ready to rob someone as entertain them.

But once he flashed a shaka to the crowd, they ate it up and forgot all about the night's delay. Mos blamed it on discrimination at his Waikiki hotel, then charged into performances of "Ghetto Rock," "Sunshine" and "Close Edge." Good stuff, except for the excessive amount of waiting ...

THE FIRST installment of Stone Groove Family's "Bitchen Kitchen" got off to a good start on Thursday night at Sam Choy's in Kapahulu.

There were lots of movers and shakers from the nightlife scene in attendance -- Matty Boy Hazelgrove, Kimo James, Killawattz Da Mongoose and Hawaiian Ryan were all there, and I spotted Jake Shimabukuro saying hello to Sharie Shima and friends at a reserved table.

Also seen at the party: KGMB's Lisa Kubota, and OC-16's "See Steph Run" star Stephanie Sanchez ...

LOOKS LIKE next month's show by Faster Pussycat isn't going to happen. The band posted a message on its website over the weekend, telling fans that the March 5 concert is postponed. No word yet on when it will be rescheduled ...

AND DON'T forget about the latest "Hops and Grinds" event at the Willows tonight.

This month's theme is "Chocolates, Strawberries and Reds," and features beers like Sam Adams' Chocolate Bock and Deschutes' Cinder Cone Red Ale. There will also be brews available from Birra Moretti, Mehana Brewing Company, Rogue Ales and Chimay.

Tickets for the beer tasting (and all-you-can-eat pupus!) are $25 at the door; you can also enter to win a trip for two to the Oregon Craft Brewers Festival while you're there. Call 271-9701 for more information ...
