Japan awards grant to research nonprofit

Japan has awarded the Honolulu nonprofit Pacific International Center for High Technology Research a $259,920 grant to support its energy programs, such as providing solar power to villages in Fiji.

The government of Japan has now awarded approximately $13 million to the center, saying that the nonprofit's programs have a positive impact on the Pacific region.

This is the 18th annual grant resulting from a 1985 agreement between President Reagan and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone to pursue cooperative research and development.
