ILH rivals Kamehameha,
Iolani meet in final

PUKALANI, Maui » Fresh off a stunning victory over four-time defending state champion Mililani, Waimea's bid to extend its string of upsets came to an end last night. The Menehunes were brought to earth with a 3-1 loss to Kamehameha in the semifinals of the Meadow Gold Dairies Boys Soccer Championships at Kana'iaupuni Stadium on the Kamehameha-Maui campus.

The victory earned the Warriors a berth in today's 8 p.m. final against Interscholastic League of Honolulu rival and top-seeded Iolani, which advanced with a 2-1 shootout victory over Kealakehe of the Big Island.

Iolani won the tiebreaker 5-3, with conversions by John William Chang, Micah Miyaki, Raymond Machi, Milo Kalama and Zachary Napier.

Kealakehe missed its first shot. Kai Villarin, Tyler Arford and Joey Giubardo made their shots for the Waveriders.

Kealakehe took the first lead of the match at 38:22 when an unmarked Giubardo rose to meet Hookela Sanborn's corner kick from the right side and headed the ball into the upper left corner of the net.

Despite playing against strong gusts of wind, Iolani battled back to tie the score in the 50th minute. Napier was taken down in the penalty area and Miyaki put away the penalty kick into the lower-left-hand corner.

In the early semifinal, the Warriors opened the scoring in the 10th minute, when Logan Sauer was taken down in the penalty area and calmly rolled the ensuing penalty kick into the lower left corner.

Kamehameha increased its lead to 2-0 in the 45th minute. Seconds after Waimea goalkeeper Justin Estes made a brilliant save to deprive Dustin Engle of a goal, the Warriors scored off the ensuing corner kick. Ikaika Pidot hit a short corner into the penalty area that was played on by a teammate, and onrushing senior midfielder Jesse LeStronge deposited the ball into the back of the net from 5 yards out.

The third goal came in the 68th minute, with Engle's pass from the left side finding Sauer alone on the opposite side of the field. Sauer's shot from 12 yards easily beat Estes.

Defensively, Kamehameha did an excellent job of containing Waimea's most dangerous player, speedy junior forward Chad Thompson, for most of the match. But the 5-foot-5 speedster put his team on the board with 2 minutes remaining when he was fouled in the area and converted the penalty kick.

Consolation Matches

Honokaa 2, King Kekaulike 0

Honokaa advanced to the fifth-place game with a decisive win over King Kekaulike. Both of the Dragons' goals came on penalty kicks by Jake Fassett -- the first following a handball in the 11th minute and the other after Travis Larsen-Helbing was taken down in the area in the 65th.

Honokaa had most of the ball in the first half, and increased its dominance after Kekaulike midfielder Davin Iwata was ejected for a hard foul 3 minutes after intermission. During a 5-minute span between the 52nd and 57th, the Dragons had three shots go off the crossbar and another off the right post.

Mililani 2, HPA 1 (PK)

In a battle of seeded teams, Mililani bounced back from a 3-2 quarterfinal loss to Waimea with a shootout victory over Hawaii Prep, outscoring Ka Makani 6-5 in a tiebreaker that lasted eight rounds. Justin Ching converted the decisive kick, depositing his shot into the lower right corner, and HPA's Roger Hancock pushed his shot wide ride.

Mililani took the lead just 44 seconds into the match when Cheyne Eugenio scored on a 6-yard header off a long free kick by Michael Smith, and maintained that advantage through halftime.

But HPA picked up the pace after intermission and evened the score at 54:45 when Billy Case scored from close range after getting on the end of a free kick by team captain Mike Kopra.

Leilehua 3, Pearl City 2 (PK)

Rallying from a 2-0 halftime deficit, Leilehua advanced to the consolation final with a 3-2 victory in a match decided following 13 rounds of penalty kicks.

A pair of goals by Steven King, in the third and 19th minutes, gave the Chargers an early lead. Leilehua responded with scoring strikes by Syd Tom in the 69th and Daniel Phelps a minute later.

Then came a marathon tiebreaker during which the first nine shooters for both teams were successful. The 10th shooters both missed, while the next two rounds also resulted in scoring shots. The shootout finally came to an end when Leilehua goalkeeper Christopher Phelps saved and teammate D.J. Tanda put his shot into the upper left corner for a 12-11 edge in the tiebreaker.
