Sea Warriors upset Seasiders

Hawaii Pacific trailed until just 1:20 remained in regulation but forced overtime and ran past Brigham Young-Hawaii last night in a Pacific West Conference basketball game at the Blaisdell Arena.

The loss dropped the Seasiders (11-7, 6-3) behind UH-Hilo in the conference. The Sea Warriors (8-11, 2-7) won despite missing head coach J.D. Barnett, who was ill.

D-II teams remained ranked: Led by top-ranked Hawaii-Hilo, three of Hawaii's four NCAA Division II men's basketball teams are ranked in the latest regional poll.

The Vulcans (20-3) hold the top spot in the West Region. Brigham Young-Hawaii (11-6) is No. 9, with Chaminade (14-8) No. 10. The top eight teams earn berths into the NCAA tournament, while the top team has the right to host a regional.

Jayhawks rout Vulcans in baseball

HILO » Kansas completed a six-game sweep of Hawaii-Hilo yesterday, dropping the Vulcans 11-1 in a nonconference baseball game at Wong Stadium.

Ryne Price's three-run homer capped a five-run, five-hit first inning for the Jayhawks (6-0). The closest the Vulcans (0-11) came was 5-1 when Jimmy Crider drove in David Chu in the bottom of the second.

Oklahoma State leads Taylor Made golf

WAIKOLOA » Oklahoma State carded a team aggregate 24-under 264 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead into today's second round of the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament.

Trailing the Cowboys in the field of 21 teams were USC (265) and Augusta State (270). Host Hawaii-Hilo was tied with Oregon for 14th at 280 while Hawaii was 20th at 290.

Sharing the first-round lead at 8-under 64 were OSU's Tyler Leon, Emmett Turner from Augusta State and Tyler Docking of Kansas. The leading Vulcan was Nick Mason, in an 18-way tie for 31st at 69, while the leading Rainbow Warrior was Cody Wolfenbarger, who shared 49th with nine others at 70.

The 54-hole tournament concludes tomorrow at the Waikoloa Village Course.

LPGA Tournament at Turtle Bay needs help

Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas for the Feb. 21-26 LPGA SBS Open at the Turtle Bay Resort.

Officials are seeking course marshals, walking scorers, greenside recorders and standard bearers. Also needed are drivers to shuttle players from the airport to the hotel and shuttle spectators from the parking areas to the Palmer Course.

UH swimming teams move up in polls

The Hawaii men's and women's swimming and diving teams both moved up to No. 19 in their respective College Swim Coaches Association poll yesterday.

The Rainbow Warriors went from 20th to 19th, while the Rainbow Wahine jumped from 22nd to 19th. Both squads defeated Washington last Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
