Christian congregations kicked off the traditional season of Lent yesterday with Ash Wednesday services. Father Gary Colton put ash on the forehead of a church member at Co-Cathedral at St. Theresa in Kalihi. Foreheads are marked with the sign of the cross, signaling a 40-day period of spiritual reflection and repentance in preparation for Easter.

No graduation is complete without flowers, and last night's Honolulu police commencement at the Hawaii Okinawa Center was no exception. Officer Lisa Aksionczyk, one of 33 graduates of the 149th police recruit class, was up to her neck in leis.
