Hawaii outfielder Matt Inouye modeled the Rainbows' new uniform yesterday at the team's media day at Les Murakami Stadium. The team opens the season Thursday at home against Alabama.


Vulcans knock down Seasiders

Alex Cabagnot scored 28 points and knocked down a pair of clutch free throws to help Hawaii-Hilo steal a win away from Brigham Young-Hawaii 96-93 last night at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

The Seasiders led throughout most of the second half but were outscored by six points in the final minute. Justin Dobson sealed the win for the Vulcans with a pair of free throws with 3 seconds left.

It was the first conference loss for the Seasiders (11-5, 6-1 Pacific West), who face the Vulcans (19-2, 7-2) again tomorrow.

"Boom Boom" headed to the Isles

Undefeated boxer Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista will take on Aree Phosuwangym in the Main Event of a March 11 event at Blaisdell Center.

Villaver International Productions is sponsoring the event, which will also include five preliminary bouts that will feature local fighters taking on boxers from San Diego. Scheduled to fight from Hawaii are Leokava Latu, John Lopez, Sitafine Talosaga, Mark Mareko, and Hanson Mantyre, who will be making his pro debut.

The card is subject to approval by the Hawaii State Boxing Comission.

Wahine win opener of Paradise Classic

Melissa Coogan tossed a 3-hit shutout and Ashley Ruff jacked a solo homerun to lead the Wahine past Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne 8-0 yesterday in opening round action of the Hawaii Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Tracie Uchima, Noelle Izumi, and Kate Robinson all added 2 RBIs.

Wahine begin season ranked No. 7

The UH Wahine women's water polo team is ranked seventh in the first Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 20 released yesterday.

Head coach Michelle Roy begins his third season at the helm Thursday with a game at San Jose State, followed by the Stanford Tournament Feb. 12 and 13.

Daniel 18th at Empire State Building race

Local firefighter Keith Daniel finished 18th out of 386 competitors at Tuesday's Empire State Building Run-Up Tuesday with a time of 13:46.

The race consisted of 86 flights of stairs up what was once the world's tallest skyscraper.

Defending champions Rudolf Reitberger and Andrea Mayr won again with record performances. Reitberger won in 10 minutes, 24 seconds. Mayr broke her own record by clocking in at 11:51.
