Jared Thornton, 19, a surf instructor on Kuhio Beach, practiced his sand shots in between surf rentals yesterday. Thornton started bringing along his golf club as overcast weather and a seasonal lull have made business slower than normal. It will be colder and drier over the entire state today through Friday, with the Big Island volcanoes expected to receive more than a foot of snow, mostly tonight and tomorrow.
