THE WAR IN IRAQ

80th soldier with Hawaii
ties killed

The 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks suffered its 13th casualty in Iraq when a 21-year-old private was killed in Mosul last week.

The Army said yesterday that Pfc. Stephen A. Castellano, of Long Beach, Calif., died Friday in Mosul from a noncombat-related injury. Castellano was assigned to Schofield Barracks' Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment.

He enlisted in the Army on Feb. 11, 2003, and joined the 25th Division three months later.

Survivors include his parents. He was not married, according to the Army.

Eighty people with ties to Hawaii have been killed in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan since early 2003.

About 12,000 Hawaii-based troops are deployed to those regions.

About 4,700 members of the Hawaii Army National Guard and Reserves left Fort Polk in Louisiana last week for Kuwait and were scheduled to leave for a year-long deployment to Iraq starting this month.
