HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Roosevelt, Kauai enter poll

Iolani garnered all 15 first-place ballots and remained atop the Star-Bulletin Boys Basketball Top 10 this week, while Radford and Kalaheo were booted as quickly as they had emerged for taking losses.

Radford lost two of its three games in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West last week, dropping the Rams out of first place in the division. Panelists sent the Rams away from their No. 6 ranking, completely off the poll.

Kalaheo, one of the younger teams in the OIA East, went 8-0 in league play before losing at home to arch rival Kailua 41-36 on Saturday. That was enough for the same voters to expel the Mustangs.

Others were more fortunate. Punahou and Baldwin continued their winning ways, and remained locked at Nos. 2 and 3. Campbell won all three of its games last week and vaulted three spots to No. 4.

Kahuku, which took its first OIA East loss against Roosevelt, slipped two positions to No. 5. The Red Raiders battle Kalaheo on Wednesday at McKinley Student Council Gym with first place at stake.

Saint Louis dropped one notch to No. 6 after losing to Iolani 57-42. Kamehameha stayed at No. 7 despite a loss at Punahou.

Hilo, interestingly enough, shares the No. 8 spot with Roosevelt despite a 69-64 loss at Waiakea. The Vikings were ranked ninth last week. This final week of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation regular season is crucial for Hilo.

Four teams -- Hilo, Kohala, Konawaena and Waiakea -- share first place with 10-1 records. Hilo hosts Kohala on Friday and visits Konawaena on Saturday. The BIIF regular-season winner earns an automatic state-tournament berth.

Kauai, 6-0 in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, checks into the poll at No. 10.
