Awards for teachers

Teachers of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry, or those who work exclusively with students of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry, are invited to apply for a scholarship to attend the Space Foundation's annual Summer Institute in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship provides a travel allowance, meal and lodging expenses, and full tuition and fees for any one of the five weeklong Summer Institute courses. Courses cover topics from rocketry and robotics to astronomy and working in space.

Funding for the scholarship is provided by Elliot Pulham, president and chief executive officer of the Space Foundation, and his wife, Cynthia. It honors the memory of Elliot Pulham's grandmother, Lucy Enos, who was born in Pahala in 1898 and died in 1976.

Applicants must be credentialed teachers working with students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

To apply, write a letter of two pages or less stating qualifications and motivation for applying, experience or interest in space themes in the classroom, what you hope to gain from the experience, choice of Summer Institute course, and how knowledge gained would be applied in the classroom.

A supervisor should endorse the application. Write Dr. Patricia Arnold, Vice President, Education & Workforce Development, The Space Foundation, 310 S. 14th St., Colorado Springs, CO 80904.

Deadline for applications is April 15.

Carnival coming up

Before finalizing those weekend plans, take note: The annual Punahou School Carnival returns, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

This year's theme is "A Pirate's Life for Me!" and will include a White Elephant tent (Pirate's Cove), book tent (Hook's Books) and plant booth offering fresh produce, lei and flowers.

The carnival will include rides, a midway and Kiddie Land games.

Punahou Carnival is known for its diverse food, to include malasadas (Capt. Hook's Cannonballs), Hawaiian Plate, Portuguese Bean Soup (Blackbeard's Bean Brew), corn, hamburgers, refreshing smoothies, chili, noodles, nachos and Greek gyros sandwiches.

The Carnival Art Gallery, in the Gates Workshop of the Punahou Science Center, will feature works by more than 200 island artists, with more than 2,000 items for sale.

A silent auction, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Science Center, will offer travel and vacation packages, comic book collections, electronics, jewelry, designer clothing and more.

The school is at the corner of Punahou Street and Wilder Avenue. Admission is free. Parking on campus is limited; additional parking for a fee may be found at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou St.; St. Clement's Episcopal Church, 1515 Wilder Ave.; Central Union Church or Maryknoll School. Or catch TheBus Nos. 4, 5 or 18.
