Friedlander steps down as CEO

Andrew Friedlander is stepping down as chief executive of Colliers Monroe Friedlander, the commercial real estate company he co-founded in 1973.

Friedlander will remain the company's principal broker. He will be replaced by James M. Piane, a former senior investment manager for Morgan Stanley in San Francisco who has also overseen management of Ala Moana Center and Bishop Square.

Piane also oversaw the management and leasing of 1132 Bishop St. and Davies Pacific Center downtown, and was involved in Morgan Stanley's recent purchase of Pearl Highlands Center.

2,000 homes slated for Big Island

A San Francisco real estate investment firm plans to build 2,000 housing units on 866 acres it purchased early last year in Waikoloa on the Big Island.

The first phase, to be called Waikoloa Heights, calls for 270 single-family lots on 111.5 acres, to be built over an estimated three years. The company, Lynch Investments LLC, said it will devote 30 units of the phase to affordable housing.

The company has a 10-year timeline for developing the entire property, which it bought for $10 million. The housing will primarily consist of single-family neighborhoods, with some multi-family development around a town center.

Fresh Start workers reject offer

Members of Hawaii Teamsters and Allied Workers Local 996 unanimously voted yesterday to turn down the "last, best and final offer" presented to them by Fresh Start Bakeries Inc., the union said.

The 37 workers, who handle production and delivery jobs for the company and represent almost all of the company's nonmanagement employees, could strike if a contract is not in place by midnight on Monday, said Michael A. Chambrella, the union's attorney.

Sticking points in the contract are medical leave, as well as pension and wage issues, said Teamsters President Mel Kahele.

A strike could affect many Hawaii groceries and restaurants supplied by Fresh Start Bakeries, including McDonald's and Burger King.
