Punahou ends 31-year
title drought

Whenever she passes the crowded wall of athletic championship plaques at Punahou, Kristl Chinen touches the Buffanblu's Interscholastic League of Honolulu softball hardware from 1973 and 1974 for good luck.

Soon, there will be another plaque.

Punahou beat St. Francis 4-0 yesterday at DeSa Field, clinching the school's first ILH title in 31 years. The Buffanbu improved to 13-0 in league play (29-2-1 overall) with one game left.

"This is for all the alumni, all the supporters from years past," said Chinen, who is in her seventh year as Buffanblu head coach.

As she has all season, Sarah Weisskopf led the way with her pitching, allowing one scratch hit.

"She was very inspiring today, hitting her spots. She was focused, intense, and driven today," Chinen said.

Gail Matsushima drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double in the fourth, and Adrienne Tanaka and Kim Nagamine each had three hits for Punahou.

Chinen said the Buffanblu have an area to improve on heading into next month's state tournament.

"We didn't play that well defensively," she said.

Catcher Kaha Weir provided a defensive spark, though, picking off a St. Francis runner from first in the fifth inning.
