Maui man isle's first crash fatality of 2005

WAILUKU » Maui recorded its first traffic fatality of the year yesterday when a man died in a one-car crash near Waikapu.

Jeremiah M. McDougal, 28, of Wailuku was riding in the back seat of a car heading toward Wailuku on Honoapiilani Highway when it went off the right side of the road and struck a wooden utility pole at about 2:25 a.m., police said.

The female driver and front-seat male passenger, both Kahului residents, were treated and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center, said police Sgt. Barry Aoki.

Aoki said police investigators are looking at whether speed or alcohol were factors contributing to the accident.

There had been one traffic fatality on Maui at about this time last year.
