Two qualify for Turtle Bay

Thomas Herzan shot a 3-under 69 and Bradley Schmierer defeated Pat McDonald on the second playoff hole yesterday to earn qualifying spots in this week's Champions Tour Turtle Bay Championship.

McDonald and Schmierer each shot 70 to force a playoff. Twenty-four golfers competed in yesterday's qualifier, which was open to all professionals over age 50.

Hilton Waikoloa Challenger tournament begins

Eighteen-year-old Jamea Jackson and fifth seed Rossana Neffa-DeLos-Rios were first-round winners in the women's draw of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger yesterday.

Americans Jennifer Tuchband and Jessica Nguyen also advanced to the second round. In the men's draw, Eddie Acuna was the only American to advance to the second round on the first day, defeating Mitchel Gelina 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

First-round matches were scheduled to continue today at 10 a.m.
