Just walking across stage
is artistic with Pilobolus

THE Pilobolus Dance Theatre gave an incredible show Saturday at Hawaii Theatre. The six dancers -- Mark Fucik, Andrew Herro, Renée Jaworski, Cleotha McJunkins III, Jenny Mendez and Manelich Minniefee -- made their movements look so easy that I went home and tried to imitate a couple of their moves. "Megawatt," the final number, had the dancers on their stomachs, inching onto the stage to the music of rock bands Primus, Radiohead and Squarepusher. But I enjoyed the piece "Walklyndon" the most, as the dancers turned the simple act of walking across a stage into a lively, humorous affair. ...

Those wondering why Honolulu Symphony concertmaster Iggy Jang's column has been MIA will be happy to know that all is well with the violinist. He is in Korea where he was invited to perform at the "Music Isle Festival" on Jeju Island. Jang continues spreading his music when he moves on to the Hoam Art Hall in Seoul next Monday. ...

Residents continue to do their part to assist tsunami victims. Last month, customers of Kay Kiyoda's Kay's After Five Karaoke Lounge in Kaimuki got to sing with the oldies band Flashback for a $10 donation. The benefit raised about $1,100. "We have great customers," Kiyoda said. "And we were happy to be able to help the tsunami victims." ...

Shout outs also go to the organizers of the Louis Vuitton Golf Cup Hawaii Charity Tournament. They raised $133,200 for the Hawaii Youth Symphony Association, Honolulu Theatre For Youth and REHAB Hospital of the Pacific. ... Congratulations go out to Nanette Lim-Yap, who received the Naupaka Award from The Waikoloa Foundation for perpetuating Hawaiian culture by spreading her knowledge of Hawaiian culture, language, song and dance; Hilton Waikoloa Village executive chef Wilhelm Pirngruber, for being named American Culinary Federation Kona Kohala Chapter's 2004 Chef of the Year; and McKinley High School alumni Kevin Chong, for being chosen to be part of the award-winning Mavro restaurant. Chong, who attended Kapiolani Community College's culinary program before graduating from New York's Culinary Institute of America, will be the restaurant's chef de cuisine.
