Castle's Scott Arque looked for room to shoot against Kaimuki's Shaun Dela Cazada last night.

Guillermo guides Knights
past Bulldogs

There aren't a whole lot of players who get the green light from their coaches.

Brad Guillermo finally saw the light. The 5-foot-6 senior drilled two big 3-pointers in overtime as Castle rallied past Kaimuki 65-58 last night in a key Oahu Interscholastic Association East game.

The home win elevated Castle to 4-3 (11-6 overall) in a tighly contested division.

Guillermo's 13 points helped a balanced Castle scoring attack. Scott Arque scored 12 points and Scott Keiter-Charles added 11 as the Knights rallied from a 14-point deficit.

"We told the guys, we played a helluva game at Kahuku on defense, but we didn't do it in the first half tonight," Castle coach Rocky Fraticelli said. A big part of the problem was the hot shooting of Kaimuki's Jordan Wong, who scored 19 points before intermission.

"We wrote his number on the board in the locker room and wrote 17 on it. Then another coach came in and scratched it out. He wrote 19, the right number of points Wong had," Fraticelli said. "We were making him look like Michael Jordan."

Wong finished with 24 points for Kaimuki (5-2 OIA East, 11-5). Jon Torres added 11 points.

"They got pretty frustrated at the end. We had breakdowns defensively," Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant said. "They have such high expectations, they get down on themselves."

A big difference in the final stanzas came at the free-throw line. Kaimuki made nine of 17 attempts. Castle made 13 of 20 tries.

After a wild finish in regulation, Castle's crowd of about 500 was enthralled. In overtime, Keiter-Charles hit a pull-up jumper in the lane, and Guillermo took advantage of a defensive miscue by Kaimuki to swish a 3-pointer from the right wing.

Kaimuki's Kekoa Onaga drove to the basket against Castle's Brad Guillermo last night.

Kaimuki bounced back with a 3-point play by Wong, and Isaiah Ano scored on a dish from Kekoa Onaga. Ano missed a potential go-ahead free throw, leaving the game tied at 58 with 1:26 to go.

From there, it was all Castle. Guillermo hit another 3-pointer from the right wing. "I just thought, open shot. Pull it with confidence," he said.

Fraticelli told his point guard to let it fly earlier in the game. "A couple times, Brad had open looks and didn't take it," the longtime coach said.

The senior guard then stole the ball from Wong in the lane, and Keiter-Charles made two foul shots to give Castle a 63-58 lead with 51 seconds to play.

After Onaga missed a 23-footer, Keiter-Charles scored on a breakaway layup to put the game out of reach.

The visiting Bulldogs were accurate at the start against Castle's man-to-man defense. Wong scored on a pair of free throws, swished a 3-pointer from the top, and stole a Castle pass for a breakaway layup as Kaimuki zoomed to a 9-3 lead. Castle stayed within range, thanks to treys by Keiter-Charles and Guillermo, but seven first-quarter turnovers derailed the Knights' momentum.

Kaimuki entered the second quarter with a 20-11 lead, but the Knights went 5 minutes without a turnover to stay within seven. With Torres and Shaun Dela Cazada hustling under the glass, Wong got hot again, driving for a baseline jumper, hitting another 3-pointer, and cutting backdoor for a pass from Onaga.

After Wong drove the middle for a layup, Kaimuki had its biggest lead, 35-21, with 1:01 left in the second quarter. The Bulldogs led 35-26 at intermission.

"Our emotions were too big. We had to calm down," Guillermo said. "Our coaches' talk made us settle down and get our composure."
