Castle's Keola Bruhn went up against Kailua defenders Tyler Harrison, Hogan Paleafei and Kainoa LaCount last night.

Castle beats Kailua

They may not always play pretty, but the Castle Knights never lack intensity.

The Knights used a high-pressure defense to go on a 16-0 run midway through the first half en route to a 47-35 win over Kailua last night.

An emotionally divided crowd of about 200 watched at the Knights' gym.

Keola Bruhn, a 6-foot senior, scored 10 points and hauled in 18 rebounds to help Castle improve to 2-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East (9-4 overall) despite making 21 turnovers. Kailua slipped to 0-3 (7-9 overall).

Victor Clore, a 6-2 senior, added eight points and five caroms for the Knights. Jonathan Horner grabbed six boards for the hustling Knights, who drew a mixed review from coach Rocky Fraticelli.

"The defensive intensity was good in the first half. Every time we have a lead, we drop off," he said. "We don't know how to finish, and that's sad because we have lots of seniors."

Kainoa LaCount led Kailua with 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. He also had three steals.

The towering center was cold in the first half, but Kailua found him on the low post consistently in the third quarter. "Lucky for us, he was missing free throws," Fraticelli said. "We're surviving right now."

LaCount made two of his 10 free-throw attempts.

Castle, using tight man-to-man and occasional full-court pressure, forced five turnovers in the first five minutes, but led only by 2 points. Kelroy Kohatsu's 3-pointer brought Kailua within 7-5, but the Surfriders went scoreless for the next 6 minutes and 47 seconds.

Guard Brad Guillermo hit a jumper from the left elbow and Louis Mansanas broke away for a layup as Castle turned up the tempo and went on a 16-0 run. Clore's layup off a feed from Mansanas capped the run, giving the Knights a 23-5 lead with 4:14 remaining in the first half.

Bruhn had seven points and Scott Keiter-Charles five to lead a balanced attack by Castle in the first half.

LaCount had a tough first half, making just one of his eight field-goal attempts. The 6-foot-7, 305-pound senior had four points by intermission to lead Kailua.

Castle extended the lead to 21 early in the third quarter. Kailua settled down in the second half, but got no closer than the final 12-point margin.

"With Kainoa, we played behind him and took away his baseline side," Fraticelli said. "But we didn't do that in the second half."
