Silverswords dealt first PacWest loss

Gene Barnes hit a pair of free throws in triple overtime to lead Hawaii Pacific over Chaminade 121-119 last night at the Blaisdell Arena.

The Silverswords (10-5) dropped to 4-1 in the Pacific West Conference while the Sea Warriors (7-5) improved to 1-1.

HPU's Stevie Johnson led all scorers with 32 points.

Donte Sykes hit a leaning shot from the top of the key with 3.5 seconds left in the first overtime to tie it at 97-all.

Chaminade's Chris Nelson hit a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

The teams will play again tomorrow at McCabe Gym.

UH-Hilo moves up six spots: Three conference wins last week propelled UH-Hilo to jump six spots to No. 19 in the latest NABC Division II Congress Top 25 poll released yesterday.

The Vulcans (15-1 overall, 3-1 PacWest) are the only PacWest team to receive votes in the poll.

Rainbow Wahine up for tough conference test

The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine basketball team plays Southern Methodist tomorrow at 3 p.m. HST in the second of three games on the current road trip.

The Wahine are 5-5 overall and 1-2 in Western Athletic Conference action. The Lady Mustangs are 12-2, 3-1.

The game will be broadcast live on KKEA radio.
