Police arrested a 19-year-old Mililani man yesterday, a day after he allegedly stole his mother's purse.

Police said the man demanded money from his 49-year-old mother on Sunday evening. When she offered him a few dollars, he got upset and walked away, police said. He returned to his mother's bedroom, pounding on the door and demanding more money, police said. He kicked the locked door open and wrestled the purse from her.

When he returned to the house yesterday, the woman called police, who arrested him for suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Elderly pedestrian injured by passing car

An elderly woman was struck by a station wagon driven by an 83-year-old man while she crossed South Kuakini Street near Nuuanu Avenue early yesterday.

Police said the woman was outside a marked crosswalk when a white 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass station wagon heading westbound on Kuakini struck her.

The woman was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in stable condition, but she was later downgraded to critical condition, police said.

Police said lighting may have been a factor in the early morning accident.
