Man who allegedly fled fatal crash is arrested

Police arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with a two-car crash in Waianae on Saturday that led to the death of a 22-year-old man.

Police said the suspect was traveling northeast on Hakimo Road in a maroon 2003 Pontiac Grand Am at about 8:30 p.m. when he crossed into the opposite lane and struck a red Nissan Sentra driven by the 22-year-old man.

The victim was extricated from his vehicle and taken to Waianae Comprehensive Health Center, where he died.

Police said the 30-year-old man fled on foot after the collision. From his Waianae home, the suspect reported that his vehicle was stolen, police said. However, a witness at the scene made a positive identification of the suspect.

Police located the suspect at his home that night and arrested him on suspicion of negligent homicide.

Police said speed was a factor. This is Oahu's third traffic-related fatality compared with one at the same time last year.
