Vulcans sting Yellowjackets

Osadonor Esene had a game-high 24 points as No. 25 Hawaii-Hilo routed Montana State-Billings 106-85 in a PacWest basketball game yesterday at Afook-Chinen Civic Center.

Brian Graham added 19 points, including five 3-pointers, Alex Graham scored 12 and Alex Cabagnot and Steven McMariyon had 11 each for the Vulcans (15-1, 3-1).

The Vulcans used a 16-0 first-half run to pull away from MSUB.

Justin Hassell finished with 19 points to lead the Yellowjackets (8-4, 0-3), while Carlin Hughes added 17.

Swords slice Mustangs: Nick Frey posted 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Chaminade basketball team to a 86-63 win over visiting PacWest opponent Western New Mexico yesterday at McCabe Gym.

After trailing by three points early in the contest, the Swords (10-4, 4-0) opened up a 20-point lead over the Mustangs (5-8, 0-3) with 3:05 left to play in the first half.

Dustin Mittelsteadt added another double-double for the Swords, scoring 10 points and collecting 11 rebounds.

UH staff headlines Quarterback Club

Three members of the University of Hawaii athletic department will be speaking at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Jackson Wheeler, assistant men's basketball coach; Melody Toth, head trainer; and Marilyn Moniz-Kahoohanohano, associate athletic director and women's administrator, will start the program at noon. The luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m..

UH football player Abraham Elimimian and Punahou volleyball player Pohai Nu'uhiwa will be honored as Sportspersons of the Month for December.
