State boxing championships coming up

Nationally ranked amateur fighter Van Oscar Penovaroff will be headlining the Hawaii State Championship boxing tournament at the enlisted club on Kaneohe Marine base Jan. 14-16. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Spots in the U.S. Championships are on the line for the fighters, as well as a spot on the USA-Elite team that travels to Russia and China.

Adam Rodrigues, Jeffrey Pelen, Ryan Bolen and Tinei Su'a are just a few of the boxers expected to compete.

Grand Slam Celebration set for February

The Hawaii baseball program's third annual Grand Slam Celebration is scheduled for Feb. 1 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The event provides a chance to meet UH baseball players and coaches and costs $65 for individual tickets and $750 for a table of eight. A pair of tickets to UH's feb. 17 game against Pacific is included in the program, which is emceed by UH broadcaster Don Robbs.

Tursunov, Czink to defend titles

Dmitry Tursunov and Melinda Czink are planning to defend their singles titles at the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger beginning Jan. 24.

The event is in its sixth year and is Hawaii's only ATP and WTA event. Brian Vahaly, Paul Goldstein and Robert Kendrick are the favorites to challenge for the men's title while Amanda Jackson, Jewel Peterson and Carly Gullickson highlight the women's draw.

Kelly, Wilson to provide golf tips

Professional golfers Jerry Kelly and Dean Wilson will be holding a clinic for children tomorrow from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Waialae Country Club.

Kelly finished third in the Tour Championship and Wilson, who is a Kaneohe native, finished third at the Valero Texas Open. The Kraft Foods Jr. Clinic is held annually before the Sony Open, which begins Monday.
