The Bloomberg / Star-Bulletin Index is a price-weighted index designed to measure the performance of Hawaii-based companies. The index was developed with a base value of 100 as of December 31, 1999. A chart of the index which shows the weekly performance of its members is published weekly in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
Barnwell takes off
Shares in Honolulu-based oil and gas exploration company Barnwell Industries Inc. soared 134.3 percent in 2004 to lead the Bloomberg Honolulu Star-Bulletin Index.
Barnwell's earnings for the recent fiscal year nearly quadrupled to a record $8.7 million from $2.3 million a year earlier. Its stock started the year just above $30 a share and finished at $74.15.
Barnwell was followed by Hawaiian Airlines parent company Hawaiian Holdings Inc., which rose 128.4 percent in 2004. The company is part of a team that has a plan to reorganize the carrier.
