Raiders rough up Surfriders

The doctor made a house call yesterday afternoon.

It may as well have been a wake-up call. After benching his starters midway through the first quarter, Mark Mugiishi brought all five back in late in the first half. Iolani woke up and went on a 19-0 run to overwhelm Kailua, 54-37, in the opening round of the Punahou Holiday Classic.

Kawika Shoji scored 17 points, including a pair of treys, to lead Iolani. Vinny Nip and Kyle Pape added eight points apiece for the Star-Bulletin Top 10's No. 1 team.

Kainoa LaCount scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds to pace the Surfriders. Iolani's defense forced 20 turnovers by Kailua.

Mugiishi, a doctor, made the proper diagnosis early in the game when his Raiders came out flat and cold.

"I was mad. There wasn't effort. We weren't playing hard," said Mugiishi, a surgeon by trade. "The way I feel, there's always guys on the bench ready to play."

Iolani trailed 20-6 midway through the first quarter. After Iolani's starters returned, however, Kailua went scoreless for 7 minutes and 7 seconds. During that run, Iolani turned the 14-point deficit into a nine-point lead.

Iolani cut the deficit to 22-18 by halftime, and went ahead, 24-22, on Wally Marciel's jump shot with 6:29 left in the third. The Raiders extended the lead to 31-22 after Pape turned a steal into an easy layup. Kailua committed nine turnovers against Iolani's pressure defense.

LaCount played with a heavily taped right ankle. He saw minimal action in the first half, but his play in the second half helped the Surfriders stay close. They were within 35-32 after LaCount scored on a three-point play in the paint.

However, turnovers continued to plague Kailua. Iolani went on a 15-4 run, with six different players scoring and won going away.

The lesson won't be lost on the Raiders if Mugiishi can help it.

"You gotta show up and be focused. Kailua's tough -- No. 5 (Tyler Harrison) is good. LaCount has an unbelievable presence. He's hard to stop," Mugiishi said of the 6-foot-7, 305-pound football standout.

Fullerton Union (Calif.) 57, Farrington 36: Brett Hoerner controlled the paint as the Indians cruised past the Governors. Hoerner, a 7-foot senior, scored 11 points and simply dominated the low post.

Mark Malasig led Farrington with 11 points.

"Hoerner's definitely Division I material. He's got great athletic ability," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "He's got good lateral movement, he can jump, he's got speed and does a great job getting into position. He gets every rebound in sight."

David Allen and Grant Meyer added 10 points apiece for Fullerton Union, which won the tournament title in 2002.

"The team two years ago had more weapons," Tacon added. "But he's as good a player as we've seen, including the ones we saw at the Iolani Classic."

Hoerner was on that '02 team.

"I was in the shadows. This year, we have a lot more chemistry. There's a lot of seniors who've played together since freshman year," said Hoerner, who's headed for San Diego State next season. "I'd say we're better now."

Punahou, ranked No. 2 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, is certainly on Fullerton's radar.

"The last time we were here, we went through everyone, but Punahou gave us a challenge," Hoerner said.

Punahou 53, Kaiser 37: Jeremiah Ostrowski and Spencer McLachlin scored 17 points each as the host Buffanblu outlasted the Cougars. It was a relatively flat start for Punahou. Jeff Peters led Kaiser with 14 points. Steven Pratt added eight.

Kealakehe 42, Moanalua 28: Ioane Spencer, a 6-5 center, scored 15 points to lead the Waveriders over the Menehunes. Guard Loa Patao added 11.

Stephen Kina, Gregory Morgan and Zachary Pendergast each scored eight points to lead Moanalua.

University 53, Mililani 45: David Johnson and Michael Tenorio scored 14 points apiece as eighth-ranked University defeated the Trojans. Alfred Clark added 12 points for the Junior Rainbows.

Ryan Shular scored 11 to lead Mililani (3-2).

Baldwin 56, Kalaheo 24: Cody Nakamura and Cody Tesoro combined for 29 points to lead No. 5-ranked Baldwin over the Mustangs. Nakamura, a 6-1 forward, scored 15 points, and point guard Tesoro tallied 14.

Chris Tumaneng led Kalaheo with six points.

Leilehua 60, Punahou II 46: John Gory poured in 16 points and Clayton Laurel added 11 as the Mules advanced. J.C. Wo led the Division II Buffanblu with nine points.

Walter Wong Classic

Hamamatsu Nishi arrived in the islands as one of the top teams in its region, but there was no way to deal with sheer power.

Saint Louis, using a major size advantage, rolled to a 72-33 win over the Japanese squad last night in the opening round of the Walter Wong Classic.

Senior Jack Miller led the way with 19 points. Cole Shidaki tallied 17 and Cameron Bayne added 12 as coach Delbert Tengan used his roster liberally.

Yutaro Uchiyama scored 10 points to pace Hamamatsu. Akihiro Mori added eight.

"We couldn't make free throws. Our shooting wasn't good," Hamamatsu coach Masahisa Yada said. "We had a hard time when our cutters got bumped underneath."

Hamamatsu is ranked fifth in its region and plays a schedule of tournaments, as opposed to the league format of American basketball. It was their first action of the season.

"We were nervous," Yada said. His team also had some difficulty adjusting to American rules. International rules require a 24-second shot clock.

Action resumes this morning at 9 a.m. in the two-tourney format of the Classic. There are eight teams each in the Crusader and Saints tournaments, vying for two separate titles.

Edison (Calif.) 54, Kapolei 36: Jeff Golden scored 16 points and T.J. Lipold tallied 14 as Edison pulled away in the second quarter with a 14-2 run. Thomas Marcin added nine points.

Brad Padayao, a quick senior guard, led the Hurricanes with 14 points. Po'okela Ahmad chipped in with nine.

South (Calif.) 76, Saint Louis II 41: Andrew Oyamada scored 22 points and Vance Albitz added 21 for South.

Bo Ronduen led the Division II Crusaders with 18 points. South broke open a close game with an 18-5 run in the second quarter.

Crescenta Valley (Calif.) 93, Assumption (Canada) 23: Zach Garcia pumped in 25 points and Eugene Yi tallied 22 as the Crusaders overwhelmed Assumption.

John Henderson led Assumption with seven points.

Bishop (Calif.) 63, Everglades (Fla.) 60: Eric Moore scored 20 points and Gyan Alexander added 18 as the Knights escaped with the win.

Chris Uz had 15 points to lead the Gators, who missed a three-point shot at the buzzer.

Bishop had a 14-point lead in the second half before Everglades rallied.

Sutherlin (Ore.) 60, Valleyview (Canada) 48: Justin Pamell scored 14 points and Zach Bailey had 12 as Sutherlin breezed to victory. Sutherlin led 29-3 early in the second quarter.

Michael Brar paced Valleyview with 14 points. Tyson Mulcahy chipped in with 11.

Holland Hall (Okl.) 68, Saint Clair (Canada) 62: Jake Wetulya scored all 19 of his points after the first quarter to lead Holland Hall.

Jason Milliguet scored 20 of his 22 points after intermission to lead the Saints.

Newbury Park (Calif.) 59, Robert McMath (Canada) 58: Frank Perez sank two free throws with 1.1 seconds left to lead Newbury Park to a win.

Jordan Cameron scored 18 points to lead Newbury. Perez finished with 12.

Jeff Chu led McMath with 23 points. Doug Cheung added 12.
