Just weeks after waiting in long lines during a frenzied Christmas tree-buying season, tree owners now face the task of disposing of their purchases.

Recycle Christmas tree
as source of free mulch

When you've had enough of your (formerly) fresh Christmas tree, the city will convert it to mulch -- which you can have back for free, if you like.

The city is operating seven refuse and recycling convenience centers, or trees can be taken to one of the Hawaiian Earth composting sites.

Trees cut into lengths of 6 feet or less can be put out with ordinary green-waste curbside collection. (For collection days in your neighborhood, call 692-5410.)

In either case, trees must be "naked" -- no flocking, ornaments or tinsel -- to be accepted for composting.

The following city Refuse and Recycling Convenience Centers are open daily 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., except New Year's Day:

» Ewa: Geiger Road
» Laie: Kamehameha Highway
» Wahiawa: Wilikina Drive
» Waianae: Plantation Road
» Waimanalo: Hihimanu Street
» Waipahu: Waipahu Depot Road
» Haleiwa: Kawailoa Road

Hawaiian Earth Products composting sites and hours are:

» Leeward: Campbell Industrial Park, open Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
» Windward: Kapaa Quarry Road, Kailua, daily 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Free Christmas tree mulch can be picked up at the following locations while supplies last:

» Hawaiian Earth Products locations, Kapolei and Kailua
» Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, Kaneohe
» Maikiki Community Garden
» Manoa Community Garden
» Waimea Valley Audubon Center
» Wahiawa Community Garden

For more information about city recycling, visit www.opala.org or call 692-5410.
