Hawaii’s sophomores
are super

Today we update you readers with information about the seasons experienced by some of Hawaii's 42 sophomores on mainland college soccer teams.

Adria Campbell put together another successful season as the third-best goal scorer (eight) for the Southern Methodist Mustangs. The striker from Punahou was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference first team.

Campbell also had one assist in 21 matches for the 15-4-3 WAC champions.

Richard Higa was the third-highest scorer with four goals for the Massachusetts Minutemen, who were 8-9-2 overall. The Mid-Pacific graduate also had one assist in 18 matches.

Liane Tom played in 18 of Boise State's 19 matches. The sophomore midfielder from Mililani scored one goal on 12 shots and had one assist.

Dana Kagawa, a midfielder from Aiea, scored once on six shots and assisted on two goals for the NCAA Division III California Lutheran Regals (9-6-5). She played in 17 matches.

Brandon Higa pumped two goals into the net on five shots for the California Lutheran Kingsmen (10-9-1). The midfielder from Punahou played in the last 12 matches, starting three after recovering from a groin injury.

Mari Kasamoto (Iolani '03) came on strong at the end of the season for Azusa Pacific (15-2-1). The striker earned a starting spot in the Cougar attack and scored her first career goals in the final two regular-season matches.

Kasamoto started five of 12 matches and needed just four shots to score those two goals.

The Cougars' dream of a national title died in the quarterfinal round of the NAIA Tournament with a 1-0 loss to Bethel College of Tennessee.

Brad Fyffe (Kealakehe) was an important reserve for the Emerson College Lions, dishing out one assist from his midfielder position in 20 matches for the NCAA Division II school in Boston.

Emerson finished 14-6-0, the team's best record ever. The Lions lost in the semifinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament.

Matthew Stucke started all 16 matches for the 4-12-0 St. Andrews Presbyterian Knights. The defender from Kaiser had two assists.

Stucke received the St. Andrews Knights Award last season for his hard work and dedication to the team. He also was on the dean's list both semesters last year.

Erica Chong, who saw action both as a defender and as a striker, came off the bench in 16 matches for the 9-7-2 Long Island Blackbirds. The Hilo graduate did not connect with any of her three shots.

Brandon Tario, a midfielder from Kamehameha, had three assists for the UC Irvine Anteaters, the third-best total on the team. He played in 20 matches, starting 11. Six of his 15 shots were on goal, but he had no luck finding the net.

Scott Shiraishi saw action in 11 matches for the 7-13-0 NCAA Division I Anteaters. The midfielder from Iolani took one shot that missed.

Daniel Scott was a starting defender in 14 matches for the 6-11-0 Gonzaga Bulldogs. The King Kekaulike graduate did not connect on his four shots, but did lead the Bulldogs in one category, five yellow cards.
