Mom gave family
‘a house filled with love’

Mildred Vivian Phillips Dods, 82, of Honolulu, died Thursday at the Queen's Medical Center.

Dods was born in Honolulu and worked many years at the Minute Chef restaurant in the Princess Kaiulani Hotel in Waikiki. She was married to the late Walter A. Dods Sr., a Honolulu police sergeant.

She is survived by sons Walter Jr., Robert, Thomas and Richard; daughters Suzanne Chong-Kee, Patricia Kosaki and Pauline Arellano; brothers Harry Phillips and Richard Phillips; sister Rachel Phillips Silva; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

"I guess we were poor, but we never felt that way," said oldest son Walter, chairman of the board of BancWest and First Hawaiian Bank. "Mom and dad both worked hard, long hours. They both wanted to give us all a house filled with love and an education, and they succeeded."

Visitation is 8 a.m. Thursday and rosary at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Church, 5919 Kalanianaole Highway. Private family burial service will be at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Aloha attire. Donations suggested to Holy Trinity Church.
