Seasiders move up in basketball poll

Brigham Young-Hawaii moved up three places to ninth in yesterday's NCAA Division II poll.

This is the highest ranking for the Seasiders (5-1) since moving to D-II in 1998. It is also the first time BYUH has been ranked in the top 10 at any level.

Silverswords on a roll: Dustin Mittelsteadt scored 19 points to lead Chaminade to its fifth win in a row Monday, an 88-82 overtime victory over Graceland at McCabe Gym.

Mittelsteadt, a senior center, added 11 rebounds and four assists for the Silverswords (6-3). Also recording double-doubles for Chaminade were sophomore point guard Zack Whiting (15 points, 10 rebounds) and senior forward Scott Metcalf (14 points, 11 rebounds).

Vulcans squeak by: Osadonor Esene's 19 points was one of four Hawaii-Hilo players in double figures and the visiting Vulcans defeated Cal State Los Angeles 72-68 last night at the Eagles Nest.

Steven McMaryion added 12 points and Brian Graham and West Hawthorne 11 each as the Vulcans improved to 11-1 for the season.
