Macadamia nut mania

The macadamia nut seems in a constant state of makeover, as local candy companies seek new ways of marketing this local favorite.

The latest developments:

Wasabi Macadamia Nuts: Island Princess adds this spicy, pea-green item to its line of gourmet nuts that already come in flavors such as Maui onion, nori and curry. The nuts are seasoned when raw, then again while roasting, using what the company calls its "proprietary technique." They sell at most retail stores in 5-ounce jars, 2.5-ounce snack bags and half-ounce single-serve bags. If you can't find them, call 839-5222, ext. 207, or e-mail info@islandprincesshawaii.com, for guidance.

Sugar-Free Chocolates: Hawaiian Host is offering its Milk Chocolate Clusters, MacNut Crunch and Dark Chocolate Macadamias in a form with zero sugar carbohydrates. They come in 3.3-ounce or 3.4-ounce bags containing individually wrapped candies, and are available at Longs Drug, Hilo Hattie and Daiei stores.
