Montverde's Arminas Urbutis was fouled by Male's Ryan Newton as Jacob Bream tried to block in the Eagles' 48-47 victory yesterday.

Xaverien sails to win
over Punahou

The Punahou Buffanblu waited for their chance to make a splash at the Iolani Classic.

Too bad they landed to the sound of a barrage of thuds on the rims of Iolani Gym. Brian McKenzie scored 17 points, including three treys, as Xaverian (N.Y.) pulled away for a 61-36 win last night before an overflow crowd.

Zamal Nixon added 10 for the Clippers, who were ranked ninth nationally by Street and Smith magazine.

Jeremiah Ostrowski scored 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead Punahou. The Buffanblu (6-4) are ranked No. 2 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10.

Punahou trailed 25-15 at the half, unable to hit open shots as the Clippers sailed away.

"We went 3-for-16 in the first half. They got us on the glass," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "That's always a problem for Hawaii teams if we don't shoot well."

The Buffanblu made it relatively competitive in the second half by switching defenses. Almost exclusively a man-to-man team, Punahou used 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones. "This tournament is amazing. Any time you change to a zone, teams adjust and back up to half court," Tacon noted. "It changes the tempo of the game."

Punahou managed to trade baskets for much of the third quarter, but the Clippers led 44-25 going into the fourth.

"I'm proud of our guys. We were able to run our stuff against their pressure defense," Tacon said.

Montverde (Fla.) 48, Male (Kent.) 47: Balanced scoring lifted the Eagles, who overcame a 23-point performance by Male's Jacob Bream.

Luc Mbah A Moute, a 6-foot-7 post player, led the way with 12 points for Montverde. Giedrius Kynsas had 10 points and Arimas Urbutis, a fellow Lithuanian, added nine. Montverde is a boarding school with students from 39 different nations.

Fairfax (Calif.) 58, Roman Catholic (Penn.) 48: Duke-bound Jamal Boykins poured in 18 points as defending champion Fairfax roared into the semifinals. Jerron Shipp added nine rebounds to help lead the Lions.

Mike Ringgold led Roman Catholic with 14 points. Guard Bob Jordan added 12, and Malik Perry tallied 10 points and nine boards.

The Cahillites trailed by nine at the half, but Fairfax got an 18-foot jumper by Boykins and a breakaway slam dunk by Jerron Shipp to open a 30-17 lead.

Roman Catholic brought the lead down to seven several times, but could not contain Boykins consistently.

Rice (N.Y.) 59, Iolani 36: In the last quarterfinal, Curtis Kelly took care of the inside business and Kashif Pratt delivered from the outside as the Raiders advanced.

Kelly, a 6-foot-9 junior with a great wingspan, finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds for Rice. Pratt and Joseph Vines added 13 points apiece.

Vinny Nip led Iolani (9-1) with 11 points. Iolani is ranked No. 1 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10.

Iolani stayed close at the start despite missing its first eight shots from the field. Rice, also nicknamed Raiders, led just 5-0 after 4 minutes. Vinny Nip drained a trey with 3:21 left in the first quarter to cut the lead to 5-3, but Iolani got no closer.

Rice cut down on turnovers against Iolani's man defense, and Kelly threw down a dunk on an alley-oop inbound pass from half court as the New Yorkers took an 11-3 lead.

Iolani pulled within 19-12 on Pape's 16-footer from the right wing. Rice coach Maurice Hicks called timeout and his team's full-court traps took a toll. Pratt drained a 3-pointer from the right corner, and another from the left with 2:13 left in the second quarter. Despite 13 turnovers, Rice took a 27-12 lead into halftime.

Consolation bracket

Kamehameha 49, Kalaheo 42: Rykin Enos tallied 16 points and Michael Ni'i added 11 for the Warriors. Kamehameha (5-3) is ranked No. 5 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10.

David Moore scored nine points to pace Kalaheo (2-6), the defending Oahu Interscholastic Association champion.

Saint Anthony 58, Aiea 41: John Powley scored 23 points and Korri Kamaka added 14 as the Trojans outlasted Na Alii. Nicholas Helsham led Aiea with 11 points.

Roosevelt 49, Kauai 47: Kerstan Ho poured in 18 points and Keo Keola added 12 as the Rough Riders edged the Red Raiders. Roosevelt is No. 8 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10.

Point guard Jeremy Manuel paced Kauai with 17 points, and center Va'afuti Tavana added 11.

Radford 64, McKinley 44: Juan Lewis scored 14 points, William Kerins tallied 12 and Justin Quinones chipped in with 10 for the Rams.

Kapena Quisano scored 12 points to lead McKinley.
