[ WAHINE BASKETBALL ]

its first loss

The final game of the Ala Moana Paradise Classic came down to which team could execute when absolutely necessary. That team was Hawaii.

Amy Sanders grabbed a rebound and hit a tie-breaking layup in heavy traffic and Alofa Toiaivao sealed the 68-64 Rainbow Wahine victory over Wake Forest with two free throws with 1.2 seconds left in overtime.

The loss was the first for the Demon Deacons after nine consecutive wins to open the season.

With the three teams finishing with 1-1 tournament records, the Houston Cougars won the title by holding the first tiebreaker, fewest points allowed (120).

"This a great way for us to go into our break. We're getting ready for conference play, so this sends a message to the conference that we are ready," said UH coach Jim Bolla.

Sanders' bucket put UH (4-4) ahead 66-64 with 55 seconds left in OT. Wake Forest then turned the ball over when Keila Evans was called for an offensive foul trying to drive the lane 12 seconds later.

The Wahine, who had experienced difficulty at times against the press, got the ball into the front court, only to have Toiaivao travel. With 5 seconds left, Toiaivao fouled Erin Ferrell on a layup try.

"I told Alofa she can't block every shot. There are times she just has to get the ball off the glass," said Bolla.

He then called time to let Ferrell think about the potential game-tying free throws.

Ferrell missed the first free throw and tried to miss the second. But the ball did not hit the rim, a violation, and UH got possession, much to the delight of the 371 fans in attendance.

Sanders wasn't even aware her putback was the tie-breaking basket.

"I'm just glad we didn't let it go like we did in the past. For the first time, we go into a game thinking we are going to win and it's everyone, not just a few people," said Sanders.

Classic Most Valuable Player Janevia Taylor of Hawaii said, "Both teams were right on their game. We wanted this one bad. I don't know how much they wanted it, but we came out on top."

Taylor recorded her first college double-double with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds that tied Toiaivao for game honors.

The Demon Deacons started the game with a 7-2 run.

Milia Macfarlane's 3-pointer triggered a 10-0 response from the Wahine and a 12-7 lead after 6 minutes of action.

Wake Forest's press caused the Wahine problems moving the ball into the forecourt. Several steals and hurried attempts by UH with the shot clock about to expire helped the Demon Deacons put together a 17-6 spurt. Cotelia Bond-Young scored eight points during the run that put the Demon Deacons up 24-18 with 7:47 left in the half.

The fortunes reversed again as UH replied with a 10-2 outburst with Toiaivao and Taylor each scoring five points. Taylor's 3-pointer gave UH a brief 28-27 lead only to have Liz Strunk answer with a trey.

Taylor's jumper tied the score at 30-30, but Bond-Young's 10-foot jumper in the waning seconds gave Wake Forest a 32-30 lead at the half.

Hawaii went up by seven points, 47-40, with 11:12 left to play, then lost the lead to an 11-0 Demon Deacon surge that included five points by Ferrell.

The Demon Deacons took a 59-57 lead with 26 seconds left on Bond-Young's layup, but Taylor sent the game into extra time with a jumper in the lane 9.3 seconds before regulation ended.

"I thought Milia did a great defensive job on No. 1," Bolla said of Wake point guard Porsche' Jones, who had seven points last night after scoring 18 in Friday's upset of Houston. "The last four or five games have been good for us."

Toiaivao followed Taylor with 17 points. Jade Abele scored 12, nine in the second half, and Macfarlane finished with 10.

The Wahine are off until they resume practice next Sunday.
