Seasiders rout St. Thomas Aquinas

Austin Smylie scored 21 of his career-high 28 points in leading the Brigham Young-Hawaii basketball team to a 90-70 win over St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) yesterday in Laie.

With the win the 12th-ranked Seasiders improved to 5-1, while the Spartans dropped to 4-4.

Smylie, who sat out most of the second half, also held the Spartans' leading scorer, Robert Epps, to just five points in the first half. Epps finished with 25 points. The only other Seasider to score in double digits was Michael Stowell with 16.

The Seasiders travel to Rohnert Park, Calif., to play Sonoma State on Dec. 28.

Esene leads Vulcans past Blue Jays: Osadonor Esene's 30 points led Hawaii-Hilo (7-1) to an 87-70 victory over Westminster College (Mo.) yesterday, the final day of the AmeriSport Coconut Coast Classic round-robin basketball tournament at Kekauokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona.

Esene was 10-for-17 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the free-throw line. He also pulled down nine rebounds as the Vulcans outrebounded Westminster 43-24.

Hawaii-Hilo's Brian Graham scored 12 points, while Alex Cabagnot and Steven McMaryion added 10 apiece. The Blue Jays were led by James Pitt, who scored 12 points, with David McDorman and Cade House each adding 10.
