Maui rescue crews save
man from ‘Jaws’ surf spot

Maui County Water Safety personnel rescued a man on a personal watercraft Wednesday at "Jaws," a world-famous big-wave tow-in surf spot at Peahi Point on Maui's eastern coast.

A fire spokesman said that rescue personnel got the injured man outside the break while waves were breaking 25 to 30 feet.

The fire helicopter picked the man off the watercraft at least a quarter-mile offshore and flew him to Haiku Community Center in stable condition, the spokesman said.

The man suffered a leg injury and possible internal injuries.

Personal watercraft are used to tow surfers in.

Hundreds of spectators were at the beach Wednesday to watch the big waves and surfers.
