Home team wins Head-Assistant Pro title

The home team of Kitt Felte and Jake Belveal shot a 63-64--127 for a one-stroke win and a $2,500 purse yesterday in the 2004 Aloha Section PGA E-Z-GO Head Pro-Assistant Pro Championship. The tournament was held at Hualalai Golf Club on the Big Island -- where Felte and Belveal just happen to work.

Oahu Country Club's Andrew Feldmann and Stephen Bell and Hualalai's Felte, again, and Chris Keiter tied for second with scores of 128.

The competition was a 36-hole, four-ball stroke-play tournament. Thirty-one teams and 46 pros took part.

Aloha Section PGA awards: The Aloha Section PGA will hold its annual meeting and awards luncheon Sunday. Poipu Bay's Michael A. Castillo will be honored as Golf Professional of the Year.

KMR School of Golf's Kevin M. Ralbovsky is the 2004 Teacher of the Year, and is also honored as Junior Golf Leader.

U.S. Army Golf Courses' Mike Iyoki is this year's winner of the Horton Smith Award for developing and improving educational opportunities. Ko Olina's Gregory Nichols gets the Bill Strausbaugh Award for improving employment conditions. Honolulu Country Club's Sheldon Sakamoto was named Assistant Professional of the Year.

Les Tamashiro won the Distinguished Service Award, and David Kim won the President's Award.

Kaanapali tourney raised $6,000: Kaanapali Golf Courses held its second annual Bash-N-Scramble for resort employees Saturday. More than $6,000 was raised to benefit the Lahainaluna High School athletic department.

Youth teams play Friendship Bowl on Saturday

The Oahu Youth Sports League will put on its Friendship Bowl -- a football event for kids ages 5-15 -- Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

Nine youth football teams, a cheerleading team and a dance team will take part, representing Wahiawa, Waipahu, Kalihi, Palama, Waikele, Kapolei, Maili and Windward Oahu.

Paradise Lua's season finale tomorrow

The Paradise Lua's Championship Cup Series finale is set for tomorrow night at the Hawaii Motorspeedway at Campbell Industrial Park.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and the races begin at 7.

First-place trophies will be up for grabs in Super Street Stock, Econo Sprints, Modifieds, Mini-Stocks, Mini-Modified, Winged Sprints and Cruzer Bruzers.

Kaluhiokalani named PacWest's best coach

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Norman Kaluhiokalani was named cross-country coach of the year by the Pacific West Conference yesterday.

Kaluhiokalani's men's and women's Seasider teams were both conference champions, winning this year's inaugural PWC meets Oct. 23 in Billings, Mont.

He started the BYUH cross country programs, and has been head coach of one or both teams for 28 years.

Kaluhiokalani also coached Chelsea Smith to her second consecutive NCAA Division II individual national title this past season. Hawaii Pacific coach Tita Ahuna was the conference's coach of the year in volleyball.
