Maui pit bull
back in custody

WAILUKU » Maui County officials were expected today to determine the next step in the disposition of a pit bull named Faust who mauled a woman at a Pukalani residence on Nov. 16.

Faust was released to his owner Scott Barrie on Wednesday after the county Animal Control Board decided to give the dog a second chance.

An animal control officer conducted an inspection of Barrie's property Friday afternoon and found an open window -- which violated the security conditions of the release -- in the house where the dog was confined, said Jocelyn Bouchard, executive director of the Maui Humane Society. The officer seized the dog.

The Maui Humane Society and Sandra Sardinha, the woman mauled by Faust, have said the dog should be destroyed.
