Hawaii swimmers finish in top 10

The University of Hawaii men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished in eighth and sixth place, respectively yesterday at the three-day Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.

Rainbow Wahine diver Rui Wang won the platform event by more than 40 points with a score of 512.10 on the final day. Her win capped a UH sweep in the diving events as QiongJie Huang won her diving events.

Swimmer Melanie Schlanger picked up the team's only NCAA qualifying time in the 100 free, breaking her own school record with a time of 49.35 seconds.

Rainbow swimmers Dena Quick (100 free, 50.56), Nicole Mackey (200 back, 2:00.33), and Katie Clewett (200 breast, 2:19.17) each posted season bests to close out the meet.

The 200 back proved to be the strongest event for the Rainbow Warriors, as three Hawaii swimmers placed in the top 16. Thomas Winkler finished sixth, Kurtis Miller eighth and Andrew Coupland 16th as the Warriors moved up one spot in the final standings from ninth on Day 2.

'Swords spear Vulcans in PacWest opener

Zack Whiting scored 23 points and dished out 10 assists as Chaminade defeated UH-Hilo 92-73 in the PacWest opener for both teams at McCabe Gym yesterday.

The Silverswords opened the second half with a 15- 2 run after leading 46-35 at halftime.

Nick Frey finished with 16 points, Dylan McCune scored 15 and Reaves had 13 for Chaminade (4-3). Osadonor Esene led the Vulcans (4-1) with 31 points.

Iolani, Leilehua coaches at Quarterback Club

David Carey, Wendell Look, Nolan Tokuda and Alema Harrington are the scheduled guest speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom.

Carey is the president and CEO of Outrigger Enterprises and will be joined by Harrington, the former voice of the Hawaiian Islanders Arena Football team and current play-by-play announcer for the HUB Goodwill Football Classic. Also speaking will be Look, head football coach of Iolani, and Tokuda, head football coach of Leilehua.

The program starts at noon following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon. The public is invited.
