Federal funds to pay 75%
of Manoa Stream costs

The federal government is chipping in to help pay for repairs to a portion of Manoa Stream damaged by heavy rains Oct. 30.

The Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service has committed funding from its Emergency Watershed Project, U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye said Friday in a news release issued by his Washington office.

Storm runoff undermined a section of the stream bank along Koali Road, just above the confluence of Palolo and Manoa streams.

The service has designated the damage severe, and will provide about $450,000 for emergency construction costs to repair the stream channel.

That is 75 percent of the cost of the project. The city will provide the remaining 25 percent, or about $150,000.

The heavy rains caused flooding in Manoa Valley, including on the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus.
