Felon faces charges relating to crashes and escape

A convicted felon with a penchant for escape faces more charges relating to his latest run-in with the law, police said.

Police charged Kristopher Kealoha, 28, who is in custody at Halawa Correctional Facility, with driving a stolen car and crashing into several vehicles while attempting to flee officers on Oct. 26. Kealoha was arrested in that case on Nov. 2 but escaped by crawling out of a partially open window while in a police patrol car.

Kealoha was recaptured Nov. 9 when he crashed a car into a barricade at the Prince Kuhio Federal Building.

The first time Kealoha escaped from custody was in 2002 when he left the minimum-security Waiawa Correctional Facility while serving a sentence for terroristic threatening, auto theft and robbery. He was recaptured a week later during a burglary at a Waipahu apartment complex.

Bicycle hits vehicle, critically injuring rider

Police said a bicyclist was critically injured last night after striking a vehicle in Kalihi.

Police said the bicyclist was coming down a hill and failed to make a right turn, then struck the vehicle. The accident occurred about 6 p.m. at Nalanieha and Kalihi streets.

Further details were not available.

Third suspect arrested in theft of pineapples

Police say they have caught a third suspect in a case where 526 pineapples were stolen from a Wahiawa field earlier this month.

About 12:30 a.m. Nov. 21, a Del Monte Fresh Produce security officer saw three men filling two pickup trucks with pineapples from a Del Monte field. Police were called and arrested two out of the three suspects.

A day later, an officer investigating the case got an anonymous tip about the third suspect's whereabouts, and police found him sleeping in his vehicle. Police arrested him on suspicion of second-degree theft. Previously, the other two suspects were charged with second-degree theft and held in lieu of $50,000 bail. Del Monte officials told police that their pineapples were being stolen three to four times a week for the past year.

Green Taurus sought in fatal hit-and-run

WAILUKU » Maui police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 40-year-old Lahaina man riding a bicycle.

The crash took place about 3:23 a.m. yesterday at Puukolii Road and Honoapiilani Highway in West Maui, police said.

The victim was identified as Lloyd Von Stockhausen Jr.

Police investigator Lawrence Becraft said that from evidence recovered at the scene, police have identified the suspect vehicle as being a light-green 1994-95 four-door Ford Taurus.

Becraft said the vehicle would have sustained significant damage to the front bumper, hood, headlamps and possibly windshield.

Maui police are seeking people who may have witnessed the crash.

The death was Maui's 19th traffic fatality this year, compared with 14 for the same time last year.
