Participants needed for
choreography slam

Choreographers are being sought to take part in the first Earnest T. Morgan Choreographers Slam in February.

The competition will embrace all genres of western dance form choreography including: ballet, modern, jazz, tap, street/hip-hop, butoh, performance art and "other." A special pohuli -- To meaning sprout from the root, send out shoots as a banana tree sends out its young -- competition invites innovative and cutting edge use of traditionally based Hawaiian movement. Choreographers are encouraged to respectfully expand on theme, abstract and modernize movement based on traditional and modern hula principals.

Awards of $500, $300 and $200 will be given in three categories: professional, "up and coming" and pohuli. First-place winners will be produced in Tau Dance Theater's spring concert Feb. 4 and 5 at Leeward Community College.

Applications will be accepted through Jan. 17. Call 255-8245 or email www.taudance.org for information or rules.

This competition is made possible in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Tau Dance Theater.
