to be auctioned

A group of eight autochromes, comprising images of lush Hawaiian landscapes, a deserted beach and people exploring the islands, circa 1910, will be among items to be auctioned Tuesday during a sale of 19th and 20th century photographs the Swann Galleries in Manhattan. The 5-by-7-inch works are expected to sell for $1,500 to $2,500.

The auction begins at 10:30 a.m. with 19th century photographs including Civil War images; a short run of George Armstrong Custer items, among them a group portrait of the General with his family and members of the 7th Cavalry taken at Fort Lincoln (estimate $1,200 to $1,800); a set of five views of Yosemite by Carleton Watkins ($6,000 to $9,000); also two circa 1895 photogravures from the magazine Camera Notes by Alfred Stieglitz, its editor ($3,000 to $5,000).

Featured Ansel Adams items are the silver prints "Still Life, San Francisco," circa 1932, printed 1974; and "Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone National Park, 1942," printed 1950 ($4,000 to $6,000 and $1,500 to $2,500 respectively).

Among many World War II era items are Henri Cartier-Bresson's "Border Patrol Guard, Franco-Belgian Border," silver print, 1940s, printed 1970s ($4,000 to $6,000); and Alfred Eisenstaedt's legendary image of a sailor embracing and kissing a nurse on V-J Day, Times Square, New York. This late 1970s print is signed by Eisenstaedt and is signed and inscribed by Edith Shain, who claims to be the woman in the photo ($5,000 to $7,000).
