Silverswords stick it to Chanticleers

Chris Reaves scored 17 points and Scott Metcalf had 13 as Chaminade beat Coastal Carolina 70-61 at McCabe Gym yesterday.

Playing its fifth game in seven days, the Silverswords (3-3) led 46-27 with less than 12 minutes remaining in the second half. The Chanticleers cut it to 53-47 with 5:35 left but Dylan McCune hit a 3-pointer and the 'Swords hit six free throws in the final 2 minutes to seal the win.

Colin Stevens led the Chanticleers (0-5) with 22 points.

Vulcans rally past Red Raiders: Osadonor Esene scored 20 points and Justin Dobson made a key steal to lead Hawaii-Hilo past Shippensburg (Pa.) 63-59 in the final match of the Hilo Shootout on the Big Island yesterday.

With the Red Raiders leading 59-55 with 1:36 remaining, Dobson stole the ball and passed to Alex Cabagnot, who assisted on Brian Graham's 3-pointer.

The Vulcans (4-0) then made five free throws for the win. Ryan Kraft scored 14 points to lead Shippensburg (2-3).

Colting, Fithian capture Ultraman world titles

Jonas Colting of Sweden and Lauren Fithian of Minneapolis won the three-day Ultraman Triathlon World Championship yesterday on the Big Island.

Both led the competition after the first two days ,coming into yesterday's 52.4-mile double marathon from Hawi through the lava fields along Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway to the finish in Kailua-Kona.

Colting, who was in his first run longer than a marathon, finished the 52.4-mile distance in 7:14.38, well behind winner Tony O'Keefe (6:34:07) of Canada but good enough to clinch the overall competition.

Colting's three-day total of 21:41:49 was better than second-place O'Keefe's 22:24:03.

The first two days of competition featured a 6.2-mile swim and 261 miles of cycling.

Fithian won the women's double marathon in 10:50.07 and her three-day time of 32:03:16 was nearly 2 hours better than second-place Suzanna Degazon (34:00:57) of Puerto Rico.

Stadler in Skins Game for first time

Craig Stadler makes his debut in the Wendy's Champions Skins Game at Wailea Resort's Gold Course on Maui, Feb. 5-6.

Tom Watson returns to defend his title in the $600,000 event against Stadler, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

"We are very excited to have Craig in the field," Chuck Gerber, executive vice president and general manger of ESPN Regional Television, Inc., said. "Craig has had a great year and deserves to be in the field with Nicklaus, Palmer and Watson."
