[ HAWAII'S SCHOOLS ]

Wide world of sports
embraces many fields

You do not have to be an athlete
to compete in the richly diverse
and dynamic industry

You score the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. You manufacture jerseys for 50 different sports teams. You organize a soccer tournament for 500 kids. You paint the end zones and lines on a stadium field.

Each week, Hawaii's teenage reporters and photographers tell us about their high school.

These are all things that contribute to the sports industry.

When people think of sports, they think of the big-name athletes who make millions of dollars every year. What they don't realize is that sports consist of many diversified areas, and there is a job in the sports industry for everyone.

The following jobs show the vastness of the sports industry:

» Athletic administration and coaching

» Sporting goods, merchandise and apparel

» Health, fitness and wellness

» Sports media, broadcasting and public relations

» Events, entertainment and gaming

» Health care and sports medicine

» Internet, new media and e-commerce

» Sports organizations and associations

» Parks and recreation

These jobs offer individuals potentially high salaries.

Without athletic administrators and coaches, where would the teams be? Everyone knows that Castle Athletics Director Richard Haru and the coaches of the school's various sports make all things happen and run smoothly.

And what a shame it would be for every athletic team to be playing in plain T-shirts and surf shorts! That is the reason why the sports industry needs the manufacturers of uniforms, as well as sporting goods suppliers.

All athletes need to stay fit and healthy to play well, and with the help of the people in health, fitness and wellness platform, they do so, paying for people to tell them to exercise.

If you enjoy the luxury of watching your favorite sports in the comfort of your own home, kicking back with a snack, then you have the sports media and broadcasting people to thank.

Everyone wants to attend a well-coordinated sporting event, not one where they are still trying to plan things when the game starts, which is why we have the events and entertainment part of the sports industry.

Being an athlete, if you get hurt in an event, you would want to have the best care possible as soon as possible, which is why we have sports doctors and health care aides that accompany the teams.

Internet, new media and e-commerce technicians make life easier by making sports memorabilia available on the Internet, making shopping easier for people who don't have time to go shopping.

Those who work with sports organizations and associations might have one of the most important jobs. They make sure the athletes are all eligible to play, that all teams get a fair chance and that everyone gets a chance to be a part of a team.

Where would our sports teams be if there were no fields, stadiums or parks to hold our events? Parks and recreation people have difficult jobs working to perfect these areas of fan worship.

Although they were not mentioned earlier, athletes and up-and-coming talent play a vital role in the sports industry. Although there are relatively few of them, they loom large in the way we watch and worship them constantly.

Castle Mall will provide
an open-air spot to relax

In the past, many students have had to eat lunch standing up or find an alternative place to sit. This was caused by the large number of students at Castle, which made it impossible for the lunchroom to accommodate them.

This past summer, construction began on the Castle Mall project, in the works since 2001. The project will provide students with a place to sit, relax and eat lunch.

"So far, it looks nice. ... The new ground for the walkway is better than the old junk concrete. ... There's more greenery," said senior Larson Abilla.

The cost of this project was approximately $80,000-$100,000; most of the money and supplies were donated by parents, alumni, businesses and students.

Demolition of concrete in the area began on Aug. 14 to make way for a new walkway. Concrete tables and stools also were installed to provide seating.

On rainy days before the Castle Mall was built, there were mud puddles on the sidewalk which made a mess. A cleaner environment should result from the new lawn.

"It ... provides better draining on our rainy days and a wider walkway," said teacher Regina Yoshimori.

Labor was done on a voluntary basis by many of Castle's students, parents and alumni. John Mossman was a key member of the Ultimate Site Committee who had all the important connections with the contractors.

The fence around the Castle Mall will come down soon, when the grass is fully grown.
