Welcome Christmas

High school bands from Georgia, Minnesota, South Carolina and Colorado will join local high school and military bands from around the island for the sixth annual Waikiki Holiday Parade beginning at 7 p.m. today.

This annual starlight parade, sponsored by the Doubletree Alana Hotel Waikiki, will ring in the holidays as it makes its way down Kalakaua Avenue, starting at Fort DeRussy and ending at the Honolulu Zoo.

Mayor-elect Mufi Hannemann will serve as this year's grand marshal, with Mayor Jeremy Harris also riding in the parade. Pearl Harbor survivors also will be honored. And, of course, Santa Claus will make a grand appearance to get parade-goers in the Christmas spirit. Crowds can expect everything from clowns to Chuck E. Cheese.

A reviewing stand, built by and placed in front of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, will seat dignitaries and honored guests.

For details, call 941-7275.

Sunset on the Beach

End your stressful day of Christmas shopping with a relaxing stint on the beach as Sunset on the Beach continues with two nights of movie screenings in the open air of Waikiki.

Or shop in the open air as crafters set up at 9 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday at Queen's Surf Beach, with entertainment starting at 5 p.m. Open Fish and Kawao take the stage tomorrow, and Jackfish performs Sunday.

"The Chronicles of Riddick," which stars Vin Diesel as a 26th-century escaped convict caught in the middle of a galactic war between two opposing forces, screens at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow. Sunday's film is "The Terminal," starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones in a tale about an immigrant forced to live in an airport terminal.

There will be food available for purchase as well, from Royal Hawaiian Hot Dog & Shave Ice, Imari Bento & Take Out, Leo's Greek Taverna, Paradise Water Ice/Funnel Cake, K Restaurant, Time 2 Grind, Ba-le, Popcorn Express and Mr. Pizza.

Admission is free. For details, call 523-CITY (2489).

Kamae signings set

Eddie Kamae will sign copies of his new book, "Hawaiian Son: The Life and Music of Eddie Kamae," at three locations this weekend:

» Tomorrow: 11 a.m. at Sam's Club, Pearl Highlands Center, and 2-3 p.m. at Native Books, Ward Warehouse

» Sunday: 4-5 p.m. at Borders Books & Music, Ward Centre

The book was written by award-winning novelist James D. Houston in collaboration with Kamae, sharing the life story of the legendary musician-turned-filmmaker.

Wave Waikiki turns 24

Ronald Reagan was president-elect, George Ariyoshi was governor and the Hawaii drinking age was 18 when the Wave Waikiki opened for business in November 1980. The Wave has survived through the years and will celebrate its 24th anniversary beginning at 10 p.m. tomorrow as owners Jack Law and Eaton "Bob" Magoon, general manager Alan Brissette and promo and marketing guy Flash Hansen celebrate yet another year of being "on the edge of Waikiki."

With DJ Maleko of Star 101.9 as host, there'll be live music by Missing Dave, plus a team of club deejays, lasers, a free sushi bar, "surprise guests" and prize giveaways valued at more than $20,000.

VIP tables and bottle service will be available, but since this is 2004 instead of 1980, it's 21 and over. Cover is $10. Call 941-0424 or check out www.wavewaikiki.com.

Tango winner

The recent Hawaii Woman Expo was a success, especially for Chanelle Kukona, who won its drawing for a Tango bedroom set.

Participants who wanted to enter the drawing were required to visit the INspiration showroom and pose for a picture with a sales representative of their choice. Kukona picked Anthony Perez, and the combination was a winning one in a random drawing.

Pamper yourself with Lush bath products

Treat yourself to a French Kiss, or grab a Little Monkey to help soften your skin. Lush, a new bath and body store in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, has a colorful line of organic bubble bars, bath melts, fragrances, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers and other products to help keep your hair and skin clean, soft and ooohhh so sweet. The lavender-scented French Kiss looks like cake from a French bakery. Little Monkey smells like bananas, natch, which Lush officials say make a great skin softener. Then there's the Two Timing Tart bubble bar. Lush, which opened Aug. 1, uses only organic and fresh ingredients. In addition to smelling good, each product carries a sticker that tells when the product was made. Earlier this year, the company further personalized the products by including a picture of the person who made it. Stop by and take in the aromas. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

[ ON THE HOUSE ]

O, Tannenbaum

As of 5 a.m. today, Home Depot Iwilei became Christmas tree central. Trees ranging from 6 to 7 feet were unloaded from shipping containers and set up for sale just in time for holiday shoppers. Prices for Douglas firs start at $37.88, and Noble firs, $49.88

Home Depot offers some tips for selecting the perfect tree:

» First, choose one that's uniformly green.

» Pull a few needles, shake the tree and inspect the limbs. The needles should not pull off or shake off easily and should be flexible, moist, sticky and fragrant when crushed.

» Limbs should be strong enough to support lights and spaced to lend visual balance.

» The bottom of the trunk should be cut to promote water absorption.
