Smylie earns PacWest honors

Brigham Young-Hawaii junior forward Austin Smylie was named PacWest Player of the Week after averaging 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds a game in three contests last week.

Smylie scored a career-high 27 points and added 10 rebounds in their loss to nationally ranked Louisville last Saturday. This is the third such honor for Smylie, who has also been player of the week once as both a freshmen and sophomore.

Weisskopf signs with Hawaii-Hilo

Punahou senior Sarah Weisskopf has signed a national letter of intent to play softball for Hawaii-Hilo according to Vulcans coach Callen Perreira.

Last year's Interscholastic League of Honolulu player of the year as a junior, Weisskopf had a .430 batting average and 0.32 ERA.

Hawaii players earn academic honors

Hawaii midfielder Joelle Sugai was named to the 2004 College Sports Information Directors of America's Academic All-America women's soccer third-team yesterday.

Sugai, a senior co-captain for the 'Bows, is a pre-business major with a 3.78 grade-point average. On the field, she led the Wahine in assists with six and leaves as the program's all-time leader in games played with 81. She is also second all-time in assists with 19.

UH-Hilo:Three Vulcans athletes earned Academic All-PacWest honors yesterday. Senior Jami Parsons and junior Lara Bachmier from the cross country team were honored as well as Rose Ramsey, a junior middle blocker on the volleyball team.

Parsons has a 3.56 GPA while majoring in health and physical education. Bachmier is majoring in biology and holds a 3.86 GPA, and Ramsey has a 3.53 GPA in business administration.

BYU-Hawaii: Six Seasiders were also named to PacWest All-Academic teams yesterday.

Kristina Folsom, Melissa Flake and Chelsea Smith from the women's cross country team, Lesina Funaki and Federica Tonon from the volleyball team and Jake Rushton from the men's cross country team were honored.

Folsom was one of just four student athletes to make the team with a perfect 4.00 GPA.
