Mana at bandstand

The second annual Maohi Native Cultural Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Queen Kapiolani Park Bandstand.

The purpose of the free event is to encourage unity, peace, healing and aloha through the exchange and sharing of all cultures, and to acknowledge the spiritual education, teachings and practices that have contributed to society's wellness.

The caring spirit of the event promises a great way to end the Thanksgiving week and begin the holiday season.

Event organizers will also pay a special tribute to the Ka Halia Aloha Kupuna and families that resided in Waikiki long before it became a tourist center. A ceremony prior to the event will be at the Ka Halia Aloha Hawaiian Iwi Burial or Memorial Monument, next to the Honolulu Zoo entrance. Family and caretakers of the site will be on hand to share the significance and history of the burial site.

The event itself will include craft and native jewelry sales and a day of entertainment as well. Featured will be music by Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Ho'okena, Moloka'i's Ra'iatea Helm, the Royal Hawaiian Band, and surprise guests.

Polynesian dance groups Te Vai Ura Nui, Maohi Nui and the Ke Ala 'Olino Native Cultural Center will perform Tahitian, Maori, Tongan and Samoan cultural music, chants, songs and dances, plus a fire knife dance presentation sponsored by Freddie Letuli's "Flaming Sword of Samoa."
