Traditions from the heart

art

A manju modified for the holiday seasons is among the cultural traditions explored in "Kokoro," from the Japanese Women's Society.

The Japanese Women's Society of Honolulu wanted to commemorate its 50th anniversary with a lasting tribute to the traditions that members have spent a lifetime learning and upholding.

The result was "Kokoro: Cherished Japanese Traditions in Hawai'i" (Island Heritage, 2004), which covers cuisine, holidays, crafts, customs, even conversational phrases.

The idea proved a good one: The entire first printing has already sold out, and the books haven't even been delivered yet. They're to be distributed Dec. 6.

Not to worry, though. Another printing has been ordered and is expected in mid-January. A pre-sale price of $12 per book will apply to any orders paid for and post-marked by Dec. 1.

If any copies of "Kokoro" remain, they'll be sold in bookstores for $17.

"Kokoro," by the way, means "heart and soul." Proceeds from the sale of the book will support the group's scholarship fund, which supports graduate students in the field of gerontology.

To order, send a check for $12, made out to Japanese Women's Society Foundation, P.O. Box 3233, Honolulu 96801.

Call 396-8092.

Image of taro represents Aloha Harvest

art

Peggy Chun's "Na Kalo" was painted in 2003.

Note cards featuring artist Peggy Chun's "Na Kalo" will be sold to benefit Aloha Harvest, a nonprofit organization that gathers leftover perishable food from hotels and restaurants and delivers it to Hawaii's needy. A portion of the proceeds also will go to help Chun, who is living with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

"Na Kalo" was the first piece that Chun painted with her left hand, when her illness cost her the use of her right hand.

Aloha Harvest Executive Director Chris Chun (no relation to Peggy Chun) said the image is fitting because taro is traditionally believed to have the greatest life force of all foods and symbolizes the sustenance that Aloha Harvest delivers to the hungry.

The note cards are available at the Saturday Farmers Market at Kapiolani Community College, in the Culinary Institute of the Pacific booth. The market is open 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays. They also may be ordered through the Web site www.alohaharvest.org, or call 537-6945. Cost is $20 for a set of five cards.
