Moore falls just short

12-year-old Carissa Moore of Honolulu missed out an a wild-card entry to the Roxy Pro by less than a point as she placed second to Caroline Sarran in trials held yesterday at Haleiwa.

The actual Roxy Pro event also got under way yesterday with Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard, currently ranked second in the world, easily advancing to the quarterfinals. Other local girls who moved on include Melanie Bartels, Megan Abubo and Keala Kennelly.

Vans Hawaiian Pro also under way: Round 1 and half of Round 2 of the Vans Hawaiian Pro also were completed yesterday with local boys Sunny Garcia, Nathan Carroll, Jesse Merle-Jones and Dustin Cuizon advancing into the third round.

Also looking to advance to the third round today from Hawaii are: Evan Valiere, Jason Shibata and Ian Walsh.

Hawaii State Open starts tomorrow

Top local professional golfers including David Ishii, Kevin Hayashi, Regan Lee, John Lynch and Joe Phengsavath will compete in this weekend's 2004 Prince Resorts Hawaii State Open, which officially gets under way tomorrow.

Some of the best amateurs from the state will also compete, including Brandan Kop, Jonathan Ota, Gary Kong, Clayton Gomi and Shannon Tanoue.

This year's combined purse is $50,000, with the top professional golfer taking home $6,000.
