Show must go on,
including going shopping
to Thai one on

FIT TO BE THAI'D: Sherry Chock Wong, who opens tonight as Tuptim in Army Community Theatre's production of "The King & I," wasn't happy with the costume she was issued, so she went shopping with former Miss Thailand Helen Berger (no relation to this writer) and created her own authentic Thai-themed ensemble ...

A TRUE HAWAIIAN: Kaupena Wong observed traditional Hawaiian protocol by bringing gifts -- two potted orchids -- for Eddie Kamae and James Houston, when he attended the party celebrating the release of their new book, "Hawaiian Son," at the Halekulani on Sunday. Raymond Kane, Elisa Dulce, Byron Yasui, Ric Tremillos and Keith and Carmen Haugen were the other local notables who stopped by. Gary and June Hughes flew in from L.A. ("You can see we're big fans," Gary said ). Houston got a big laugh when he opened his comments with the observation that "Nothing spoils a party faster than a literary reading." Guess what he did next ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Uluwehi Guerrero, who is celebrating tomorrow ... also to Tara Ziegler (Saturday), Shane "Akoni" Dellomes, Carmen Haugen and Dorothy Stamp (Monday), and Karl Veto Baker (Wednesday) ...

HERMAN ROCKS: Peter Noone (a k a Herman of Herman's Hermits) gave a four-star performance headlining Tom Moffatt's "British Invasion" concert in Blaisdell Arena on Sunday. Noone sounded like he did back in the mid-1960s and sang almost all his old hits in a tight 60-minute set with solid backing from a new generation of Hermits. Noone proved a fine comedian as well. Some of his funniest bits were about Gerry Marsden ("He played at my parents' wedding") who preceded Noone on the three-act bill. Chad & Jeremy were clean, classy and acoustic as the opening act ...

HEROES AND VILLAINS: Bravo to Claudette Kozuki who found and returned the wedding ring Sonny Maguire lost during the British Invasion concert ... Auwe to the low-life who found a pair of old DKNY glasses in the Sheraton Waikiki Hawaii Ballroom after the Hawaii Opera Theatre Opera Ball on Saturday and kept them. How ghetto is that? ...
